Wu Dang Tai ChiAlthough Shaolin is the most famous of the kung fu schools, other schools also existed. Soldiers of the Imperial Army developed military styles, wealthy Chinese families employed kung fu masters to protect the household and teach kung fu to their children, towns and villages practised kung fu to defend themselves from bandits. The Wu Dang style of martial arts (also known as Wudan, Wudang, Wudong or Wu Tang) evolved from the Taoist monasteries of the Wu Dang mountains in Hubei Province in a similar manner to the way Shaolin Kung Fu evolved from the Chen Buddhist monastery of Song Shan Mountain. In the West, Taoist contributions to Chinese culture such as Yin and Yang and I Ching are well known. But little credit has been given to the Taoist contribution to the Chinese martial arts. Taoism's most notable contribution to the Chinese martial arts is the development of Tai Chi Chuan. It's creator was a Taoist priest called Chang San Feng who sought to find immortality through the cultivation of Chi (qi). As a system of self defence it is recognised as a 'soft' or 'internal' style as its circular movements intend to delfect and redirect energy back to an opponent. The system spread widely through China and many styles of Tai Chi evolved from it. The more common styles of Tai Chi include Chen, Yang, Wu and Woo, and other martial arts incorporate its philosophies including Bagua (Pa Kua) and Xing Yi (Hsing I). Wu Dang style Tai Chi is one of the rarer styles of Tai Chi. It is often practised by Taoist monks and taught at Toaist schools and temples across China. It uses a combination of both hard and soft movements. Wu Dang Tai Chi also has a jian (straight sword) form. Shifu Wang is a master of Wu Dang Tai Chi as well as Bagua and Xing Yi. Xing Yi includes several animal forms including bear, tiger, snake, dragon, eagle, chicken, hawk, swallow and monkey. |
